Governor Eddie Baza Calvo, the Yigo Mayor’s Office and Municipal Planning Council and a number of island dignitaries gathered in Mataguac, Yigo for a ceremony recognizing the massacre in Chagui'an, which took the lives of 45 Chamorro men during the bloody conclusion to the 1944 American re-invasion of Guam.
“This is the last ceremony for the liberation festivities, and I want to thank you all for commemorating all of the victims of war,” Governor Eddie Baza Calvo said. “For every fatality of a war, it was someone’s father or mother, or brother and sister. It is important that we honor them, for they have made the ultimate sacrifice for our people.”
Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, Commander of the Joint Region Marianas, was also present and delivered remarks at the memorial. Yigo's Mayor, Rudy Matanane said, “I want to thank you all for being here to help us celebrate the memorial for all 45 men that lost their lives.”
A mass was held at the memorial followed by a wreath laying by Governor Calvo and other dignitaries to commemorate the victims.
“We join the descendants of the victims in honoring their loved ones today. Our prayers are with you and may God bring your families the comfort to help you on this day," Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio stated.
