Balancing work, family, and school is no easy task, but for Ashley Barcinas, a mother of four, graduating from Asmuyao Community School marks a major milestone in her journey toward building a new career.
With support from the Guam Department of Labor’s American Job Center, Ashley was able to return to school to complete her secondary education while working and raising her children. The flexibility of Asmuyao’s programs allowed Barcinas to balance her schedule at her own pace.
“Programs like Asmuyao give people the opportunity to finish school without forcing them to choose between family, work, and education,” said Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero. “Ashley’s story is a reminder that with the right support, opportunities, and programs, everyone can reach their goals. I want to congratulate Ashley for pursuing school while continuing to be dedicated to her family and career.”
With previous experience in human resources and the food and beverage industry, Ashley is now determined to take her education further and challenge herself in a new field. She is interested in exploring opportunities in child welfare or other areas to help the community, and will continue working with GDOL to find the right career path.
“Ashley’s graduation shows the real-life impact of community schools. Her grit, determination and resilience, and similar stories from Asmuyao, make this achievement even more meaningful," said Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio, who hosted ceremonies for Asmuyao graduates.
"These students may graduate one at a time, or few and far between, but their achievements are meaningful and far-reaching. Barcinas sets an example not only for her children but for our island community never to give up," he added.
Through the American Job Center, Barcinas was connected to training and resources that helped her complete her education.
David Dell’Isola, labor director, emphasized the importance of these programs in creating opportunities for Guam residents, especially for those seeking alternatives for secondary education.
“Every day we push workforce development through education and training and we’re very proud to have a partnership with Asmuyao Community School,” Dell’Isola said. “There’s no limit to who we include in our workforce as long as you’re ready and willing to build a career, and the American Job Center is a great place to start.”
