Pacific computer geek event on Guam coming up

Guam welcomes 1st annual Hacktoberfest celebration

The Code Fountain Institute, an organization created from the founder and facilitators of freeCodeCamp Guam, is hosting its inaugural Guam Hacktoberfest event on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Westin Resort Guam. The event will include workshops on technologies used such as Git and Github, mentored “hack time,” and a lunch buffet mixer for coding and technology professionals and enthusiasts to network.

Hacktoberfest is an annual, worldwide celebration of open source software presented by technology giants DigitalOcean, Github, and Twilio. Though mainly centered around software development, Hacktoberfest encourages all people to make contributions to open source software not only through coding, but also other means such as enhancing documentation or contributing artwork. During the month of October, contributors are encouraged to make five contributions in the form of “pull requests” on the Github website for limited edition prizes. Some popular open source software projects are Linux, Android, Mozilla Firefox, and WordPress. Other companies participating in Hacktoberfest include Microsoft, Sendgrid, and Auth0.
