Community Events: Filipino outreach program opens registration for September classes

Registration is now open for Eskwelahang Munti ng Guam, a Filipino language and cultural outreach program.
The program, which is organized by the Filipino Cultural Center (FCC), under the leadership of Mr. Monito Co, with support from the Philippine Consulate General in Agana, Guam and the Filipino Community of Guam, will hold classes from Sept. 6 to Nov. 29.
Eskwelahang Munti, which means "small school," offers a curriculum that covers various aspects of Filipino culture, including language, history, core values, geography, folk dances, and music. This comprehensive approach is designed to give students a deep understanding of their Filipino heritage.
“Since its inception, the Philippine Consulate General in Guam has actively supported EMG’s program which promotes the Filipino language and culture to the younger generation, connecting them to their Filipino heritage and identity thus helping to preserve it” said Consul General Rosario P. Lemque.
“The Filipino Community of Guam gives its full support to the Eskwelahang Munti because this is one vehicle by which we are able to promote our rich cultural heritage, starting with the children. The curriculum of EMG will give the students a lot of exposure to our language, folk dances, songs, customs, and traditions. I'm quite excited!” said Edna Rebanal, FCG president.
Since its inception in 2010, the program has helped over 300 participants complete its immersive curriculum.
"This is the second group of outreach sessions organized for the year," said Gloria Baguinon, principal of Eskwelahang Munti. "It’s been a joy to see how our students and their families have come together. We’re not just teaching language and history; we're giving kids a chance to discover their roots and a place where they truly belong.”
While the program's focus is on Filipino language and culture, it is open to all participants, from ages 6 to 17, who are interested in learning, regardless of their background. Participants in the past have included children from both Filipino and multicultural families.
A one-time registration fee of $50 is required, but all instruction is provided free of charge. Classes will be held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 5 of the Tamondong Building on Fatima Street, near the corner of Marine Drive in Dededo.
