Guam War Survivors Memorial Foundation Supports Local Music Programs

(GWSMF)– The Guam War Survivors Memorial Foundation hosted a concert last summer in commemoration of War Survivor Remembrance Day entitled, Sentimental Journey: A Tribute to Guam’s World War II Survivors.

The concert, which featured the children of war survivors, who are also some of our island’s most talented musicians, was such a hit that the Foundation hosted an encore performance and managed to raise enough funds to support local music programs.

“Music was such an important part of our ancestors’ survival during the war,” said Foundation president Frank Blas, Jr. “How appropriate is it that in remembering our war survivors, we are also able to pass on their love for music in this important way, by supporting the teaching of music to future generations.”

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Guam Museum’s Changing Exhibit Gallery Room in Hagåtña, the Guam War Survivors Memorial Foundation will present the following Legacy Awards:

• $1,000 to The Guam Territorial Band for its Trip to Carnegie 2017.

• $1,000 to The George Washington High School Vocational Band for outfitting the band with needed instruments and other band equipment, materials, and supplies.

• $1,000 to The Larry Franquez Drum Clinic for the 21st Annual Drum Clinic 2017.
