Miss Saigon Guam opens Friday
The legendary musical “Miss Saigon Guam” will play on Dec. 2 and 3 at the Southern High School Theater with show times at 7 p.m.
“Miss Saigon” is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr.
The local production is being presented by Broadway Guam, in conjunction with Step Up Entertainment & Dance Company.
“Miss Saigon” is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an American GI and a Vietnamese bargirl set in 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War. A tragedy of passion and beauty, it is one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time.
The local production will be headlined by Richel Mejares and Jennella Nelmida as Kim, Sam Hashimoto and Raymond Mathews as Chris, Travis Aguon as The Engineer, Krystal Paco as Gigi, Carl Pacheco as John, Paul Valdez as Thuy, and Marianna Hernandez and Erin McCracken as Ellen. Performing with the local cast is Jojo Urquico, an original cast member of the Miss Saigon European tour who will be playing the role of Thuy for one night only.
The Guam production of Miss Saigon is produced by Broadway Guam — Ernest Ochoco (director), Max Ronquillo, Jr. (orchestral director), Margarita “Margie” Dancel (choreographer), Rubyjane Buhain-Redila (PR and marketing director), Gary Encarnacion (marketing director), Clare Calvo (acting/ dance coach), and ably assisted by Martin Estabillo (marketing).
This project is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency, Division of the Department of Chamorro Affairs, Government of Guam, and the Office of the Governor.
