First Lady Christine Calvo delivers books to southern Guam health center
Guam First Lady Christine Calvo delivered a shipment of about 200 books to the Southern Region Community Health Center in Inarajan in support of the Reach Out and Read Program. She also read Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat to children in the waiting room.
Reach Out and Read is a nonprofit organization that gives children a foundation of success by incorporating books into pediatric care, and encouraging families to read aloud together. The program enables providers to gauge the progression of motor skills and sensory perception during well-child visits, and educates parents on the importance of interacting with their children using books.
As honorary chair for the Guam Early Learning Council, First Lady Calvo volunteered for the role of ROR Coordinator about a year ago. Since then, she has delivered over 1,0000 books with help from donations by community partners.
In upcoming months, Calvo's office will be expanding the ROR program to serve the Northern Region Clinic in Dededo.
