Rota emerges from Bavi, begins long road to recovery

(Marianas Variety)-- Residents across Rota began clearing debris and assessing damage Tuesday after Super Typhoon Bavi battered the island, leaving destruction across residential neighborhoods, businesses, government facilities and public infrastructure.

Within hours after Gov. David M. Apatang issued the all-clear, homeowners were seen removing fallen trees, salvaging damaged property and making temporary repairs. 

Photographs submitted to Marianas Variety also show municipal cleanup efforts underway as crews worked to clear roads and address storm-related hazards.

The photographs, provided to Marianas Variety by residents from different parts of the island, document widespread damage that includes destroyed roofs, snapped utility poles, downed power lines, damaged homes and commercial buildings, and debris scattered across roads and neighborhoods.

Several properties sustained structural damage as powerful winds tore away corrugated metal roofing, uprooted trees and damaged exterior walls. The submitted photographs also show numerous damaged utility poles and power lines, with some roads partially blocked by fallen poles, trees and other debris.

The images capture the first hours of recovery, with residents securing damaged homes and businesses, clearing debris and salvaging belongings in the aftermath of the storm.

The full extent of the damage has yet to be officially determined as assessments continue. However, the photographs reflect the significant impact Bavi had on homes, businesses and public infrastructure across the island.

Marianas Variety received the photographs directly from residents following the passage of Super Typhoon Bavi. Together, they provide a broad visual record of the storm's immediate aftermath and the beginning of recovery efforts across Rota.
