Tropical Depression 09W was upgraded to a tropical storm early this morning, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. It is expected to intensify in the coming days, presenting significant concern for all of the Mariana Islands, from Guam to Pagan.
The National Weather Service Guam described Tropical Storm 09W as a significant threat for Guam and the CNMI as it maintained a track toward the region.
A special weather statement remains in effect for Micronesia, detailing potential impacts associated with TS 09W as it passes north of the Federated States of Micronesia.
As of 7 a.m., Tropical Storm 09W was located near 10.8N 160.9E, which was about 1,100 miles east-southeast of Guam, moving northwest at 15 mph with
maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
JTWC indicates the surrounding environment is highly favorable for rapid intensification. Numerical models and forecast tracks have consistently indicated a passage of a tropical cyclone somewhere through the Marianas late Sunday and Monday.
