Guam hospital secures federal grant for storm-related repair work

By Pacific Island Times News Staff
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved a $1.41 million grant for Guam Memorial Hospital's ongoing efforts to repair the damage caused by Supertyphoon Mawar in 2023.
Officials said the grant would support roof and exterior wall restoration and the installation of storm shutters as part of GMH’s recovery from Typhoon Mawar.
The fund will partially reimburse restoration work already completed or underway, helping address costs that remained uncovered after insurance and Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance.
“Our people count on GMH when they need us most, and we have a responsibility to keep strengthening the hospital they depend on,” said Dr. Joleen Aguon, hospital administrator and CEO. “Securing this award reflects the initiative and persistence of a team committed to that responsibility. "
Mawar made landfall in May 2023, packing sustained winds of between 150 mph and 185 mph and leaving a trail of destruction. It was the strongest storm to hit Guam since 2002, with damage costs estimated at more than $10 billion across the island, including at defense facilities.

GMH’s awarded grant funding increased by approximately $10.74 million between Dec. 31, 2025 and Sept. 2, 2026, reaching $22.34 million, according to the hospital’s September grant portfolio. These grants supplement regular revenues and local appropriations.
GMH officials said the roof and wall restoration would help reduce water intrusion and protect the spaces and equipment needed to provide care during severe weather.
“These improvements support the work our healthcare teams do every day,” said Jesse Quenga, acting associate hospital administrator for operations. “Keeping water out and protecting essential equipment helps us maintain a safer environment for patients and employees. This award brings additional support to the progress already taking place across our hospital.”
