The leaders of the Federated States of Micronesia and Fiji have stressed the importance of regional solidarity, particularly in addressing shared challenges such as climate change.

During a recent meeting in Suva, FSM President Wesley Simina and Fiji President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere discussed regional cooperation through the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

“This regional initiative addresses key issues ranging from security and economic development to social and environmental matters,” according to a press release from the FSM government.

“Both leaders underscored their commitment to working with their Pacific neighbors to combat climate change and protecting the natural heritage of their respective island nations for future generations." the press release said.

The two leaders noted the unique strength of Pacific culture and heritage, which they said set the island region apart from the rest of the world.

Simina, who paid a courtesy call to Katonivere on Sept. 4 while in Fiji for his meeting with the World Bank, reaffirmed the FSM's permanent diplomatic presence in Fiji.

"So long as there is an FSM, there will continue to be an FSM Embassy in Fiji,” the FSM president said.

He also thanked Fiji for supporting FSM citizens pursuing higher education and professional careers in Fiji, particularly in the medical field.

According to the FSM government, Simina also met with FSM citizens and students residing in Fiji.

The students, the president said, “represent the future leaders and professionals who will contribute to FSM’s growth and development.”

"Your success is a testament to the strength of our nation," Simina told the students. "We are proud of your dedication and hard work, and we look forward to seeing you contribute to our nation-building upon your return."
