GRMC to terminate Urgent Care services

Guam Regional Medical City

The Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on Thursday announced the termination of its Urgent Care services, effective June 23, as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts.

GRMC said its Emergency Department will remain open. Complying with the federal law, GRMC said all patients presenting to GRMC requesting emergency services will still be entitled to a screening exam to assess for any medical emergencies.

Urgent Care services are provided at Guam Memorial Hospital, IHP Medical Group, American Medical Center, FHP Urgent Care Center, and the Guam Seventh-day Adventist Guam Clinic.

The hospital administration disclosed last week that it has been streamlining its operations and procedures “using five-star hospitals in the mainland as a benchmark to gauge our progress.”

The restructuring began two months ago, affecting “less than 40 employees,” GRMC said.

“Under the guidance of chief restructuring officer Hugh King, GRMC has made tremendous strides to reduce overhead and costs by eliminating redundancies and improving processes throughout the hospital in order to lower costs and provide patients with more affordable healthcare,” the hospital said.

GRMC said King is an expert in strategic business planning and execution, improvement in financial and clinical operations, and strategic financial planning. King has identified several areas where GRMC can further improve.

“We will be implementing these modifications as we continue to upgrade our services. GRMC will be making changes in certain departments, reductions in staff, and improving efficiencies in our procurement policies,” GRMC said in a press release.

The hospital administration said the adjustments will result in streamlined operations “that enable GRMC to provide our community with high value, affordable healthcare.”

GRMC said its specialty clinics, outpatient departments, and inpatient units “will operate with the same level of excellence.”

“While we are achieving the goal of providing high quality care as evidenced by securing and maintaining certification from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and accreditation from The Joint Commission, our new goal is to improve our ability to lower costs to provide more affordable healthcare,” said CEO and president Michael Cruz, M.D.,

“GRMC will continue to make further improvements and restructure as necessary to ensure we remain a sustainable and affordable center of excellence for Guam and Micronesia.”

Last year, GRMC US $155 million financing with Asian and North American institutional lenders.
