Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is leading a delegation of investors for a four-day visit to Palau this week to explore business and trade opportunities in the island nation.
Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. said the visiting delegation will sign a memorandum of understanding with Melekeok State to develop a new golf course.
“They will bring a design team. They want to make it—because it's around the capital—first class,” Whipps said.
He said the developers planning the project in Palau currently operate an eco-friendly golf course in Taiwan.
“So, I said, well, if you can do it here, let's do an eco-friendly golf course in Palau. Because that's what Palau is known for,” he said.
The official trip, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is part of Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its ties with Palau, one of its three loyal allies in the Pacific island region.
The delegation includes representatives from Taiwan's tourism, medical, and green energy sectors.
The foreign ministry said Lin’s delegation will review investment and business cooperation over the past year and discuss future collaboration.
The ministry also said the trade mission will highlight Taiwan's strengths in innovative technology, smart medicine, digital resilience and sustainable development.
Lin was in Palau in January for the Pacific nation’s 12th inauguration ceremony.
