Colonia, Yap-- The Federated States of Micronesia joined the people of Yap in mourning the passing of Robert A. Ruecho, the state's former governor.
“Gov. Ruecho was a leader who carried his responsibilities with dignity and honor. His contributions will be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire,” said Andrew Yatilman, environment secretary, who spoke on behalf of President Wesley W. Simina.
“As we bid farewell to our late governor, we hold firmly the values he stood for: commitment to his people, unity within our islands and service to our beloved nation,” he added.
Ruecho passed away last week at the age of 79. He served as Yap governor from 2003 to 2007. In 2008, he moved to Guam, where he served on the Advisory on Micronesian Affairs for then-governor Felix Camacho. He became the consul general for FSM on Guam on Oct. 17, 2011.
Yatilman extended the president’s condolences to Ruecho’s family, the people of Yap, and all who mourn his passing.
In a press release, the government of Yap said Ruecho’s life was defined by service to his community, his state and his people.
Ruecho was educated at Tomilang School, Dalipebinaw Elementary School, and began his professional journey as a radio announcer trainee with WSZR-AM, known as KUTE today, before dedicating his talents to education through the Head Start Program and the Yap State Department of Education.
Ruecho was a classroom teacher at Yap Junior High School from 1974 to 1979.
He began his political career as a senator with the Yap State Legislature in 1991. He served as the chairman of the Committee on Government Health and Welfare, serving with diligence and dedication in the First, Second, Third and Fourth Legislatures.
As Yap's governor, "he provided strong leadership with integrity, promoted traditional values, and worked tirelessly to advance the development and welfare of the state," the Yap government said.
