Aquarium of Guam names new general manager ahead of reopening

The Aquarium of Guam has appointed an aquarium industry veteran as its new general manager as the Tumon attraction moves through a major redevelopment ahead of its reopening.

Aaron Sprowl will oversee the final stages of the redevelopment and lead the aquarium's operations, according to Advanced Aquarium Technologies, the Australian company managing the facility under a long-term services agreement.

A reopening date has not yet been announced.

Sprowl brings more than 20 years of experience in aquarium and zoological operations, including facility openings, redevelopment projects, animal welfare programs and large capital projects across North America, the Asia-Pacific region, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the Middle East.

His previous work includes roles with the Corallium Marine Life Institute in Saudi Arabia, Nuevo Acuario Mazatlán in Mexico and the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station. He also worked with Merlin Entertainments across several SEA LIFE attractions.

Few professionals have had direct involvement in as many aquarium openings, redevelopments and operational transformations around the world. His experience will be invaluable as we complete the aquarium's redevelopment and prepare for reopening."

As general manager, Sprowl will also work with local tourism officials, government agencies, businesses, educators and community organizations as the aquarium prepares to resume operations.

"The Aquarium of Guam occupies a unique place within the community. It introduces people to the wonders of the ocean, supports environmental awareness and provides memorable experiences for both residents and visitors," Sprowl said.

"My immediate priority is to support the completion of the redevelopment program while building strong relationships across the island. I look forward to spending time with tourism leaders, government stakeholders, local businesses, educators, community organizations and Guam's military community to better understand how the aquarium can serve and connect with all of the communities that call Guam home."

The redevelopment is also expected to expand the aquarium's educational opportunities and community engagement, while maintaining its role as a visitor attraction serving Guam's tourism industry and local residents.

The Aquarium of Guam is in Tumon Bay and has been closed while undergoing renovations intended to update the facility, visitor experience and educational offerings.

Advanced Aquarium Technologies is responsible for the aquarium's day-to-day management, operations and future development under its management agreement.
