Guam Legislature Speaker Benjamin J.F. Cruz has named Senator Telena Cruz Nelson Acting Chairperson of the Committee on Rules until such time as the vacancy created by the resignation of Senator Michael F.Q. San Nicolas is filled.

“I believe continuity is important during this transition period. I am looking forward to continuing the work of Committee on Rules,” said Senator Nelson in a news release..

The vacancy became effective Friday, June 30, 2017. San Nicolas announced his plan to quit during a meeting of the committee last month, shocking colleagues, given that the Rules chairmanship is an important position at the legislature.

San Nicolas made his move after less than six months at the helm of the committee, declaring that he had achieved many of his goals, including finishing the body's move to its refurbished building, reworking rules on how prospective legislation is reviewed and submitted and updating the legislature's web site.

Senator Nelson had been serving as Vice Chair of the Rules Committee.
