Over 300 war reparation checks ready for release this week

 

The Guam Department of Administration is preparing to release over 300 checks for adjudicated war claims this week, according to the governor's office.

 

Adelup said checks are only  being issued to claimants who have been verified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and approved for payout by the local program. Check recipients are being called today.

 

More checks will be cut in coming weeks as the U.S. Department of the Treasury continues to verify claims submitted through the local program.

 

Check distribution will be done at the Guam War Claims Processing Center in Tamuning (former Hakubotan building) on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Checks that are not picked up this week will be mailed.

 

Verified claimants picking up checks must:

• Bring a valid photo ID

• Verify their social security number Individuals picking up a check on behalf of a claimant must: • Bring a valid photo ID of individual picking up check

• Bring a Power of Attorney

• Verify the claimant’s social security number.

 

“Our manåmko’ have waited a lifetime for these checks. Our administration is grateful to all those who understood the urgency in getting this done,"  acting Gov. Joshua Tenorio said. "From D.C. to Guam, we must thank our partners in the White House, the Departments of the Treasury, Justice, and Interior as well as our former delegates who kept the issue of Guam War Claims alive in the Halls of Congress. We also cannot forget those who fought for this process from the frontlines, most especially Speaker Tina Muña Barnes, who along with Senators Amanda Shelton and Wil Castro, authored P.L. 35-61.”
