New superintendent of Catholic Education named

Archbishop Michael Byrnes of the Archdiocese of Agaña announced the appointment of Dr. Juan Flores as the new superintendent of Catholic Education on Guam.

Flores began his tenure as superintendent this week. He replaces Richard Alvia who stepped down at the end of May to complete his doctoral studies stateside in Catholic Educational Leadership.

Flores has been in the field of education as a teacher, school administrator, and even head of the Guam Public School System. His experiences also include teaching and administrative positions at the college level on the U.S. mainland and at the Guam Community College. As a teacher, Flores focused on science and math classes - physics, chemistry, biology, and algebra. As an administrator, he was involved in curriculum and assessment, college counseling, and teacher evaluation.

Flores’ elementary, junior high, and high school experiences were in archdiocesan Catholic schools -- the former Cathedral Grade School, Bishop Baumgartner Junior High, and Father Duenas Memorial School. He graduated from FD only weeks after Supertyphoon Pamela hit Guam in 1976.

Flores earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He earned his Master's in Education through the University of Portland Program on Guam. He earned his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
