Panuelo named FSM president

Colonia, Yap— David Panuelo of Pohnpei is the new president of the Federated States of Micronesia, replacing Peter Christian.

The now-open at-large congressional seats in Pohnpei and Kosrae will be filled by special elections.

Yosiwo George of Kosrae was re-elected vice president of FSM, while Wesley Simina, Chuuk was elected speaker of the 21st Congress.

The 21st Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia met in Palikir for its inaugural session on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 11 a.m. to seat the recently elected representatives of the four states.

On the agenda was the swearing in of the newly elected senators and the vote to determine the nation's next president and vice president from among the four at-large members and the next speaker from among the two-year representatives.

Each state elects one at-large congressional representative who serves a four-year term. The remaining ten representatives serve two-year terms that are apportioned by population.
