Christian declares national emergency in FSM

February 25, 2019

Palikir, Pohnpei— Federated States of Micronesia President Peter Christian on Monday declared a national emergency in response to the devastation  caused by typhoon Wutip.

If approved by the FSM Congress, the emergency declaration would allow Christian to set aside up to $200,000  in disaster response fund to assist affected state governments with the provisions of immediate relief and humanitarian needs.

The emergency declaration is subject to consultation with Congress, which will convene in 30 days,  to either approve or reject the president's  declaration.

Wutip left Chuuk badly damaged when it plowed through the Marianas and Micronesian islands over the weekend.  The damage cost has to be assessed.
