Guam in state of mourning following death of longtime Malesso Mayor Ignacio 'Buck' Cruz

On the passing of former Mayor Ignacio 'Buck' Cruz, Governor Eddie Baza Calvo proclaimed a state of mourning for Guam. The former long time and popular mayor passed away on November 1, 2017. Flags will be flown at half staff until the day of his interment.

“We are deeply saddened by Mayor Buck Cruz's passing. He was a true patriot of our island and our condolences and prayers go out to the family," Governor Calvo stated.

“We ask the people of Guam to join the Governor, First Lady Christine, my wife Madoka and I, as we pray for the Cruz family during this difficult time,” Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio added.

Guam Delegate to Congress Madeleine Z. Bordallo also issued a statement on the passing of the former Merizo Mayor.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Merizo Mayor Buck Cruz. Buck was a dear friend and a dedicated public servant for the people of Merizo and our entire island. As a survivor of the occupation of Guam during World War II, Buck was a member of Guam’s greatest generation, and he served our country with distinction, attaining the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a strong advocate for seniors, our environment, and culture, and I will always remember his leadership during my husband Ricky’s administration. I join our entire community in mourning Mayor Buck Cruz’s passing. I extend my condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be deeply missed but memory will live on through all who knew him.”

From Senator B.J. Cruz, Speaker of the 34th Guam Legislature:

“On behalf of the Guam Legislature and the People of Guam, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mayor Ignacio “Buck” Cruz.

As a wartime survivor, Buck went on to spend his life in service to our island. While we mourn his loss, we celebrate his accomplishments—as a teacher, veteran, statesman, father, grandfather, and friend. He shall be sorely missed, but long remembered for how he lived: a beloved leader of the People.”
