On Independence Day 1944, events unfolding on Saipan and elsewhere as Americans prepared for the invasion of Guam, were relegated to the back pages of U.S. mainland newspapers. in favor of the European war. This was a common complaint of American forces in the Pacific if they were even aware of the coverage back home: Asia and the Pacific were terra incognita to most Americans and the media serving them.
